Parade through town tonight to open 4-day Westminster Fallfest


The 21st annual Westminster Fallfest begins tonight with the annual parade through town from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Marching units, cars, floats, clowns and local personalities will wind their way west on Monroe Avenue, south on Pennsylvania Avenue, east on West Main Street, north on Longwell Avenue, and end at East Middle School.

For four days, the city celebrates the start of a new season on the city playground off Longwell Avenue and surrounding area.

Tomorrow's activities include a ride night -- six hours of rides for $12 ($10 with a coupon) -- and music by Jennifer Rose and On The Rise Band at 7 p.m. Festival hours are from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Friday's feature is Midnight Madness Shopping from 6 p.m. to midnight, when downtown shops will be open for business. Festival hours will be 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Baltimore pop singer Ronnie Dove with On The Rise Band takes the stage at 7 p.m.

Craft vendors, entertainment and music highlight Saturday's activities from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Vendors will be open until 6 p.m. on the Longwell parking lot.

The super ride matinee will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Hubcaps perform 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday's stage entertainment will include COOL Kids Program at 10 a.m., Westminster City Recreation Aerobics at 11 a.m., Terry Gourley & Band at noon, Perna Gymnastics at 12: 15 p.m., karaoke contest at 1: 30 p.m., Hot Trax DJ from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Fallfest Olympics from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

For Sunday, vendors, games and rides will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Entertainment will include Choe's Hap Ki Do at noon, Jazz Caravan at noon, Terry Gourley at 1: 15 p.m., pie eating contest at 2 p.m., Carroll County Cloggers at 2: 30 p.m. and Fallfest Olympics from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Billed as the "biggest charitable event of Carroll County," Westminster Fallfest, sponsored by the Westminster City Recreation Department, provides thousands of dollars to several designated charities each year.

This year's recipients are 4-H Therapeutic Riding, Bright Vision Therapeutic Riding, Carroll Hospice, Christmas in April, Northeast Social Action Program, and Westminster Kiwanis Club.

Fallfest provides free booth space to approximately 25 nonprofit organizations during the four-day event.
