Most of yesterday's remaining high school sports events were postponed or canceled because of school closings.
Many will be made up today, Monday or Tuesday (see schedule). Many have yet to be rescheduled.
The Howard County Invitational Cross Country Meet scheduled for yesterday has been canceled for this year because of the closure of county schools due to widespread power outages.
The four-team North Harford girls soccer tournament scheduled for today has been moved to Oct. 16.
Bel Air's football game against Frederick County foe Urbana and North Harford's game with Harford Tech have been canceled.
Bel Air coach Bruce Riley said his team hasn't been able to practice for three days, so he did not want to play today. With the Monday Yom Kippur holiday, there was not enough time to squeeze in the game next week before Harford County league play begins next Friday night.
"It was a safety issue," said Riley. "We had no practice Wednesday, Thursday or [yesterday], but Urbana practiced Wednesday and [yesterday]. I just felt we weren't totally prepared to play a football game [today]."
Riley added that since his team is 0-2, deleting a game likely would not affect the Bobcats' chances to make the Class 3A playoffs. In addition, he said that since the divisor used in figuring the point totals to compute regional playoff standings has been dropped to nine from 10, one less game would not make much of a difference to either team.
North Harford coach Fred Foster also said he did not want to play on Tuesday and then again Friday night. He said, "I guess [deleting a game] will have some impact, but I don't know what the consequences will be."
Two other games involving Harford County football teams will not be played this weekend but will be made up. Makeup dates for Havre de Grace at Bohemia Manor and Joppatowne at Rising Sun likely will be decided early next week.
