Hereford scored 22 points in the second period en route to yesterday's 42-7 rout of Baltimore County 1A-2A league rival Loch Raven, improving its winning streak on the road to 18 games.
The game, played at Towson High, was a continuation of Thursday's contest.
Fifth-ranked Hereford (2-0, 1-0), playing all of this year's games on the road due to field renovations, held a 15-7 lead with 11: 28 left in the first half Thursday when lightening forced the game's suspension until yesterday.
"On Thursday, they were chanting that we were over-rated. They didn't think we're all that good," said running back-linebacker Ryan Vogel. "We played badly last week, but today, I think we came back and played up to our own expectations."
Loch Raven (0-2, 0-1) had good reason to think it could win: The Bulls had to score 15 points in the final 35 seconds to defeat Loch Raven last season.
All-Metro C.J. Feldheim rushed for 110 yards, three touchdowns and grabbed a conversion pass from Scott Wdowiak, and Todd Leitzel scored twice, returning a first-quarter interception 45 yards for a 7-0 lead, and a second-half kickoff 85 yards.
Vogel (6 feet, 210 pounds) scored his third touchdown of the season, and Rob Bateman converted four of five extra-point kicks (he's 8-for-9 on the year), and punted once for 43 yards.
Loch Raven's Eric Douglass tied the game in the first period with a 5-yard run, but the Bulls clamped down after that.
Defensively, Feldheim foiled two punts -- once with a block -- and had three tackles for losses of yardage. Kress Adamson recovered a fumble, and All-Metro lineman Adam Hendrix had four tackles for losses of yardage.
Catonsville 42, Western Tech 22: Steve Matthews (217 rushing yards, two touchdowns), B.J. Page (three receptions, 98 yards, two TDs) and Josh Desmond (two rushing TDs) led the Comets (2-0, 1-0) in a Baltimore County 1A-2A league game.
Joe Cromwell's 71-yard scoring reception was his third of the season for the Wolverines (1-1, 0-1). For Tech, Mike Goodwin and Dominque Foxworth each rushed for scores. Goodwin blocked a punt, and Foxworth and Tony Parker had interceptions. Catonsville's Jeff Graves was perfect on six extra-point kicks.
