Orioles' ups and downs

Mascot intrigue - DOWN- First The Bird is allegedly shoved from a wall by a Philadelphia tough, injuring his ankles and resulting in criminal charges. Now The Bird gets sued for millions for allegedly assaulting a fan. How about pay-per-view "fan cam?"

Albert Belle -UP- Back-to-back ups, the rarest of honors. Belle became the fourth player in major-league history and first in the last 50 years to amass eight consecutive 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons. Entered the weekend on a nine-game hitting streak.

Brady Anderson -UP- Brady Anderson has long subscribed to the theory that a mad player is the best player. Given his offensive surge in Minnesota and his league-best on-base percentage for a leadoff man, Anderson has proven the point since being shifted from center field.

Arthur Rhodes -DOWN- The organization now concedes what has been obvious for weeks. The A-Train will remain parked for most if not all of the remaining schedule. What will six weeks of virtual inactivity do to Rhodes' value on the free-agent market? His representatives may seek a five-year deal calling for starter's money. Hmmm.

Peter Angelos -EVEN- His recent Greek junket was designed to jump-start the Hellenic national program. How about doing the same for Charm City?

"Late and close" -DOWN- If the Orioles were merely .500 in one-run and two-run games they would have entered the weekend 9 1/2 games off the wild-card lead. Oh, never mind.
