A Howard County police officer and an auxiliary police officer are suing the driver of a bus for Jimmy Buffett over an accident that injured them after a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in August 1998.
Officer Richard L. Rutledge and Auxiliary Officer Kurt T. Sturr were directing traffic after Buffett's concert as Kevin J. Cieslinski was driving away in a bus.
The suit claims that Cieslinski ignored the officers and struck them as he was leaving the concert. Both officers claim they sustained serious injuries.
Cieslinski was charged with several traffic offenses. Two weeks ago, he was convicted by a Howard County Circuit judge on charges of negligent driving and willfully disobeying the lawful order and direction of a police officer. He had pleaded not guilty but agreed to a statement of facts in the case, and the remaining five counts were dropped.
Cieslinski received a $400 fine and 30 days of unsupervised probation.
The suit was filed Sept. 2. It also names Cieslinski's employer, Senators Coaches Inc., and others in the bus accused of telling Cieslinski not to stop, including Howard H. Kaufman, Buffett's manager, and Charles A. Fernandez, the road manager.
