Severn springs upset on Mt. St. Joseph; Cleaver, McMullen rush for 2 TDs each in 28-14 win

Quarterback Tom Cleaver rushed for two touchdowns and completed 10 of 16 passes for 190 yards and no interceptions, and Scott McMullen rushed for two scores and a conversion run as visiting and unranked Severn upset 10th-ranked Mount St. Joseph, yesterday, 28-14.

Dan Lilly rushed for 171 yards, and Drew Habech booted two extra points as the Admirals (1-0), of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association's B Conference, defeated the Gaels (0-1) in their first meeting in about 35 years.

"I have a great deal of respect for [St. Joe's coach] Mike Working and his program, and our kids just went up there and played a great game of football," said Severn coach John Beckman. "We had no turnovers and they had three, which might have been the difference. Our kids played with a lot of balance and determination and came through when it counted."

Severn, which trailed 14-7 at halftime, shut out the Gaels in the second half. The Admirals scored 14 points in the final period of a game that was suspended with four minutes remaining on Friday because of lightning.

Defensively, Severn was led by McMullen, Habech, Joe Salsich, Paul Ford, David Roahen and Mike Houser.

The Admirals, who vanquished St. Mary's of the A Conference in the final game of last year's 4-6 season, have a bye this weekend before taking on Loyola of the A Conference.
