Towson at a glance

Coach: Gordy Combs (eighth season)

Last year: 5-6

Conference: Patriot League

Radio: WTMD (89.7 FM)

Stadium: Minnegan (5,000)

Offense: Pro I

Defense: 4-3

Top returning players: RB Jason Corle, WR Adam Overbey, C John Tierney, KR Dennis Cliggett, DB Jabari Garrett, LB Aaron Sakevich, DE Andrew Hollingsworth.

Top newcomers: DB Madieu Williams, OG Jason Gunning, OT Geoff Waugh.

Strengths: The offensive line improved as last season progressed, cresting with a fine performance in the Dayton game in which Towson scored 42 second-half points. If he can remain healthy, Jason Corle is one of the most dangerous backs in the conference. Jabari Garrett leads a defensive backfield that has the Tigers coaching staff almost boastful.

Weaknesses: QB Joe Lee has one career start, and that was three seasons ago. His teammates trusted him enough to give him a co-captain slot, but his inexperience could show at times, no matter how well he may know the system. Overbey and Jamal White are athletic, but they have to be more effective in catching the football. On defense, the main question marks are on the defensive line, where Towson must replace Dan Ross and Eric Erhardt.

Strongest opponent: Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks return 15 starters from a team that went undefeated in the regular season, and played eventual national champ Massachusetts tough before bowing in the second round of the Division I-AA playoffs.

Key game: Lafayette. Along with Bucknell, the Leopards are in the tier above Fordham and Holy Cross in the Patriot League cellar that Towson wants to climb from. Combs has highlighted this Sept. 11 game and the following matchup with Bucknell as measuring sticks for how far his team has come in the conference.
