Aberdeen Eagles

1998 record:

Coach: Debbie Bowman

Outlook: The Eagles need a group effort on defense to protect junior goalkeeper Rae Bolich. Having lost only one starter from last season, Bowman expects the Eagles to be a better match against the larger schools.

Bel Air Bobcats

1998 record: 6-7

Coach: Phyllis Hemmes

Outlook: The Bobcats had their most losses in 28 years last season but they are determined to come back strong. One reason for optimism is the return of senior Jacque LaFleur, one of the county's standout scorers, who has combined for more than 80 points the last two seasons. The Bobcats lost three double overtime games last season but Hemmes hopes to reverse that trend with an opportunistic defense.

John Carroll Patriots

1998 record: 6-4-3

Coach: Tess Gauthier

Outlook: The Association of Independent Schools B Division champs appear well-prepared to stay near the top. A talented junior class includes Futures program players, Jana Facchinei and Emily Gray, whom Gauthier anticipates will be a force alongside Jill Iacchei on the front line. Bridie Crook is the only proven player on defense. The Patriots usual tough schedule includes five games against AIS A Division Schools.

Edgewood Rams

1998 record: 3-9

Coach: Cass Mairs

Outlook: Mairs has seven returning sophomores and there's a noticeable improvement in their skills as several players attended camps this summer. The Eagles will need strong efforts from sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Webb as scoring may be at a minimum.

Fallston Cougars

1998 record: 15-3

Coach: Alice Puckett

Outlook: The Cougars produced their seventh state title and eighth consecutive county championship under Puckett last season and little is in Fallston's way to add another. Foremost, senior Ashley Staples returns for her fourth year in goal and the Cougars are loaded with scorers, led by Kelly Biedermann. Puckett labels this as one of her fastest teams that figures to be dangerous in transition.

Harford Tech Cobras

1998 record: 1-7

Coach: Carey Preston

Outlook: The Cobras begin their second season as a varsity sport with a full 12-game schedule. Preston, a former player at Fallston, also intends to further promote the program.

Havre de Grace Warriors

1998 record: 5-7

Coach: Judy Forder

Outlook: The Warriors continue to rebuild after their breakthrough season two years ago, when Havre de Grace finished 7-5. Forder will count on her defensive unit of Angie Wood, Jen Fillmor and Tara Hochstein (goalkeeper) while the attack line finds its way.

C. Milton Wright Mustangs

1998 record: 7-6-1

Coach: Carla Harwood

Outlook: The Mustangs hope the move up to Class 4A is a smooth one. And Harwood likes her chances with all but her goalkeeper back from last season's starting unit. Forwards Melissa Prange and Stacey McNamee should supply the scoring with Lauren Popiolek helping from the midfield.
