Ericka Butler, outside-middle hitter, Western

Athletic, the 5-foot-9 Butler has become a dominating player, thanks to her powerful shot and quickness. An excellent softball player as well, Butler, a junior, played an important role last year as Western won the city title.

Kim Emrich, outside hitter,

A first-team all-Howard County selection, Emrich is a steady passer and consistent and powerful hitter. The senior's maturity and leadership qualities will be important as the Eagles go for their fourth straight state title.

Megan Hube, outside hitter, C. Milton Wright

A first-team all-Harford County selection, the 5-foot-11 Hube is a powerful hitter. Also a standout softball player, the intense senior always is trying to improve.

Lindsay Lawson, outside hitter,

The 5-foot-8 Lawson has power and placement and is an excellent blocker. A returning starter, she continues to improve and has stepped nicely into a leadership role since Dulaney graduated its top power hitters.

Megan Medford, backcourt,

Severna Park

Though only 5-foot-3, Medford can come off the bench and control a game. She's intense, quick and always around the ball. Medford, a first-team all-Anne Arundel County selection last season, is an excellent passer.

Kim Sheedy, middle hitter,

Francis Scott Key

The 6-foot senior was a dominating middle hitter last season, collecting an average of nine kills a match in leading the Eagles to a 13-4 mark and a trip to the regional finals.

Matches to watch

No. 5 Mount Hebron at No. 1 Centennial

Sept. 15, 5: 15 p.m.

This is the Howard County opener for both teams and the only time they meet in the regular season, because they are in different divisions. Mount Hebron beat Centennial twice last year in the regular season, but the Eagles handed the Vikings their only loss of the season in the Class 2A South region final.

Centennial at No. 4 River Hill

Sept. 27, 5: 15 p.m.

Because these two Howard County teams play in the same division, they'll meet twice during the regular season. The other match is scheduled for Oct. 20 at Centennial. River Hill lost twice last season to the Eagles, the first match in five games and the second in four.

No. 11 North Carroll at Liberty

Sept. 28, 7 p.m.

This is the first of two scheduled matches -- they play each other Oct. 28 in the final regular-season match -- between the Carroll County rivals. North Carroll beat Liberty last year for the regular-season title, then, two weeks later, Liberty topped the Panthers in the Class 3A region semifinals.

No. 2 Dulaney vs. No. 3 Severna Park

Oct. 7, 5 p.m.

Dulaney of Baltimore County gets its chance against perennial power Severna Park. This is the first meeting between these teams since Tim Dunbar, Anne Arundel's all-time winningest coach (237-22), took over as Falcons coach 13 years ago.

Severna Park at No. 7 Broadneck

Oct. 21, 5 p.m.

Broadneck has moved up to Class 4A, and both teams are in the East region. This could be the first of three meetings between the teams should they meet in the Anne Arundel county championship and the postseason.
