Beach concerts in O.C.

Grab a blanket or beach chair and head for the Caroline Street beach in Ocean City for three days of free concerts, in addition to a concert by the legendary Beach Boys. Main act entertainment starts tomorrow evening with the modern rock band Sleeping Giants. Saturday night, the music starts with Rivers Edge and continues with country singer Lee Greenwood. Listen to Motown sounds by the Drifters, the Coasters and the Marvelettes Sunday evening. And on Monday, the Beach Boys take center stage at noon.

In addition to the headliners, a variety of local and regional bands perform every hour on the hour, seeking the title of Best Beach Band '99 and a cash prize of $1,000.

Except for the Beach Boys performance, all concerts are free. Entertainment starts at 7 p.m. tomorrow, noon Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Beach Boys tickets, at $10 and $20, are available at the Ocean City Convention Center box office, or call 800-551-SEAT. For more information, call 800-OC-OCEAN.

Blue Ridge Rodeo

Cheer on professional cowboys this weekend when they compete for the prize buckle at the Blue Ridge Rodeo Round-Up at Great Meadow, The Plains, Va. Events include bareback and saddle bronc, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, steer roping and barrel racing. Also featured are food, live music and pony rides. The two-day competition is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the largest governing body of professional rodeo in the world.

Great Meadow is situated between The Plains and Warrenton, about 1.5 miles from the intersection of Routes 17 and 245. Gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday (rodeo 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and noon Sunday (rodeo 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.). Admission in advance is $10, $5 ages 3-12; $13 and $7 at the gate; free for ages 2 and under.
