Drumfest

Listen to the sounds of drums and bugles and cheer on your favorite group when seven senior corps from the United States and Canada compete in the 11th annual Drumfest Drum and Bugle Corps Championship, Saturday night at Greenway Stadium in Cumberland. More than 1,500 performers are participating in the event, which is sanctioned by Drum Corps Associates of New Jersey. Also appearing is the famed Yankee Rebels Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps from Baltimore.

Blues, more at the shore

This weekend, travel to Cape Charles, at the southern end of Virginia's Eastern Shore, to enjoy more than nine hours of blues Saturday at an outdoor venue. Then cool off with gospel and blues in an air-conditioned theater Sunday afternoon. Headlining Saturday's festival are Bo Diddley and Bobby "Blue" Bland, the Tams, Greg "Fingers" Taylor, the Crudup Bothers, Tim Drummond with the Killer Groove band and the Bennett Street Band. Also appearing are a variety of regional bands. Sunday afternoon, listen to gospel and spirituals by the Harmonizing Four from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., enjoy a free reception with the band Freshwater, then listen to Cathy Ponton King and the Tough and Tender Blues Band from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The site for Saturday's festival is the former football stadium off Route 13. Gates open at 8:30 a.m.; festival hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Sunday's concerts take place in the Cape Charles Arts Theatre. Tickets for the gospel concert are $6 and the blues concert, $10; combined ticket for both Sunday concerts is $15. Call 757-442-5175.
