Suspicious-looking package prompts 15 people to evacuate in Glen Burnie

Fifteen people were evacuated from their homes, a street closed and the light rail stalled for an hour early yesterday in Glen Burnie after a convenience store employee found a buzzing electronic package atop a car at 106 N. Broadview Blvd.

Bomb technicians from the state fire marshal's office successfully opened and examined the package, a home security alarm attached to a battery.

About 2 a.m., Anne Arundel County police officers closed North Broadview and blocked off the light rail from Ferndale Road to Ferndale Avenue. They were opened again about 5 a.m., after the package was dismantled.

An investigation is under way, said county fire department spokesman John M. Scholz.

County official on short list for job in Fulton Co., Ga.

Thomas C. Andrews, the county's top land-use official, is a finalist for a job in Georgia, according to a published report.

Andrews is one of four people vying for the job of Fulton County administrator, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A decision is expected within two weeks.

Andrews said that such job searches are routine and do not reflect a desire to leave Anne Arundel.

County Executive Janet S. Owens said that Andrews had not informed her that he had interviewed for the job last week.
