Published in 1996, "Women in Their Beds" won the PEN/Faulkner prize, the National Book Critics Circle award and the Rea Award for the Short Story. Arthur Katz, 91, who created the Corgi toy cars beloved by a generation of collectors, died June 26 in London. He is known for improving on the typical die-cast metal toy cars by adding details, gadgets and gimmicks that thrilled children and adults -- who now pay hundreds of dollars for mint-condition Corgi cars from the 1970s.

Abelardo Diaz Alfaro, 82, whose short stories gave voice to Puerto Ricans' search for identity, died Thursday in San Juan. He published thousands of short stories and scripts, first winning international acclaim with his 1947 collection "Terrazo."

Claudio Rodriguez, 65, a Spanish poet known for his down-to-earth themes and deeply symbolic language, died Thursday in Madrid of colon cancer.
