SILVER SPRING -- Kensington's Jane Fitzgerald, a four-time champion, dominated Corrie Tayman, of Congressional Country Club, 7 and 6, as three former champions advanced in the first round of the 78th annual Maryland State Women's Division Amateur championship at Argyle Country Club yesterday.

In second-round play this morning, Fitzgerald will play 1994 champion Andrea Kraus, of Woodholme Country Club. Kraus, who set a course record with a 4-under-par 69 Tuesday, thwarted Bonnie Fry, of Bel Air and Maryland Golf and Country Club, 4 and 2.

The other two past champions in the draw of 16 faced each other, with 1981 titlist Karen Jones, of Argyle Country Club, outlasting another four-time winner, Joan Winchester, from Rolling Road Golf Club, 2 up.

Among four others advancing, Sparrows Point's Jessica Fernandez is 19, and Columbia's Jessica Lewis, Congressional's Erin Clasper, and Green Hill's Brooke Bendler, are 18. Also advancing was Norbeck's Lisa Schlesinger.

Two rounds today will reduce the field to the two finalists for tomorrow's scheduled 18-hole final.
