James Barnes Jr., 70, who in 1962 piloted a U-2 spy plane that helped alert the United States to the threat of a Soviet missile buildup in Cuba, died of a stroke July 6 in Mountain View, Calif. A contract pilot for the CIA, he photographed the missile sites and touched off one of the most frightening confrontations of the Cold War.,
