As 540 guests arrived at the Glenangus Farm in Harford County, they were greeted by a scene that looked straight out of medieval legend. In the middle of a brilliant green meadow, a tent that looked like a white palace rose from a rainy afternoon mist.

Inside that canvas castle, the "lords and ladies," in evening gowns and tuxes, celebrated at the Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation's "Starnight '99." The evening included a cocktail hour, dinner and a performance by country music singer Lee Ann Womack.

Among those assembled: Virginia Dresher, her four children and their spouses -- owners of Glenangus Farm and event honorary chairs; John Cain and Tania Benfield, event co-chairs; Shirley Klein, foundation chair; Diane Lyn, Susan Klein and Randy Worthington, event committee members; Dr. Clarence Smith, chief medical officer of Maryland Personal Physicians Inc.; H. William Acker, managing partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers; and Elaine and Roger Ralph, owners of Bel Air Athletic Club.

The royal reception raised $140,000 toward construction of a new Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and expansion of the emergency department at Harford Memorial Hospital.
