Summer reading club beginning sixth year with family program

RANDALLSTOWN -- Registration and the first weekly meeting of the "Just Say Yes to Reading Club" -- a program in which volunteers and families read together -- will be held at 6: 30 p.m. tomorrowat Randallstown library, 8604 Liberty Road.

The club, in its sixth year, is a joint venture of Randallstown library and the county's Mu Xi Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, an African-American service sorority. It will meet at 6: 30 every Thursday evening through Aug. 12.

Increased literacy for children ages 3 to 13 is the goal of the program, in which sorority sisters and volunteers form circles with children and parents and practice reading by reading to each other. Information: 410-887-0770.

$10,000 memorial scholarship offered for music students

DUNDALK -- A $10,000 memorial scholarship funded by the Poly-Seal Corp. will be offered to Dundalk's community college for students interested in music.

The gift was made in honor of Joenell Fisher, a Poly-Seal employee with a background that included jazz and gospel performances. Information: 410-574-6608.

Police seeking applicants for school crossing guards

TOWSON -- County police are seeking applicants for school crossing guards in the county.

Applicants must be at least 18, have reliable transportation and pass a background check and physical examination. Guards generally work an hour in the morning, an hour in the afternoon and may work additional shifts at parades, fireworks displays and similar events.

Anyone interested in applying may call the Police Department's Traffic Resource Management Unit at 410-887-5822 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
