A 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during an attempted robbery Saturday night in North Baltimore, a police spokeswoman said.

Agent Ragina L. Cooper said Angus Michael Breen of the 2000 block of Druid Park Drive was standing with a friend in the 1600 block of Union Ave. in Hampden about 9: 45 p.m. when a silver-colored car pulled up and at least three males got out and tried to rob them.

Breen was stabbed at least once in the upper body.

The assailants drove away, Cooper said.

She said Breen was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Breen's mother, Diane Shoemaker, said her only child was en route to the light rail to catch a train to Timonium to see a movie.

"He had $15 on him for the train fare and the movie when it happened," Shoemaker said.

She said her son and his friend were waiting for another boy, who was inside his home, getting money for the movie.

Shoemaker said her son had attended Roland Park Elementary/Middle School but was not doing well. She applied to the State Board of Education and got permission to teach him at home.

"He had trouble sitting still in middle school and concentrating so I applied and received permission to teach him at home," Shoemaker said.

She said her son did well at home and was to have entered the 10th grade at a senior high school in September.

"It's very hard for me to talk about his death," Shoemaker said at her home last night, "but I hope that someone who knows who killed my son will call the police."
