A Maryland Transportation Authority employee died yesterday after he was struck by a truck and fell from Interstate 895 onto a highway ramp in Southeast Baltimore.

Authority spokeswoman Kerry Brandt said Robert West, 53, a 14-year employee, and another maintenance worker were cleaning storm drains on the shoulder of southbound I-895 about 2: 45 p.m. when a delivery truck crashed into the back of a state highway dump truck parked nearby, sideswiped a water tanker near the dump truck and struck West.

Brandt said West, of the 800 block of E. Fort Ave. in southern Baltimore, was knocked over a jersey barrier and fell 25 feet to the on-ramp of northbound Interstate 95 at Keith Avenue. The other worker was not injured.

Brandt said West died about an hour later at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

She said the area in which the men were working was marked with safety devices.

Brandt said the delivery truck driver, Tony Schanne of Glen Burnie, suffered leg injuries and was taken to Harbor Hospital Center.
