THE BALTIMORE SUN

Three former champions lost, and there were at least a couple of impressive breakthroughs, as play moved through the first round of the Women's Metropolitan championship at Sparrows Point Country Club yesterday.

Sharon Pusin, 2-down at the turn, won the 10th and 11th to get even, and eventually won the 18th for a 1-up victory over multi-titlist Andrea Kraus; defender Joan Winchester went out, 4 and 2, before Ellie Jones, who made a statement of her own as the No. 16 qualifier; and Tinker Sanger lost to Shirley Keeney, 1-down.

Janice Misey made a successful start, winning the 18th to outlast Amy Pappas, 1-up, in a meeting of new Sparrows Point members. Joan Lins also recorded a 1-up decision, beating Pat Erdly.
