The team of Jerry Courville and Joe Sommers broke away from the pack with two late birdies and wrapped up their second Chesapeake Cup title with a 54-hole total of 200 yesterday at Caves Valley Golf Club.
With four teams in the hunt coming down the stretch, Sommers hit his second shot to three feet at the 468-yard 17th, and Courville followed with a near duplicate at the 400-yard 18th.
This pushed the 1995 titlists two shots clear of the field, and par at No. 1, their final hole in the shotgun start, polished off a 6-under-65, and turned out to be enough.
"We were steady throughout the tournament," Sommers said. "We only had one bogey in three rounds."
Kelly Miller and Chris Dalrymple had the low tournament round of the 20-team championship flight, a 64, to finish with 204.
Jerry Greenbaum and Paul Kramer made up two strokes in regulation, and Kramer birdied the first extra hole to defeat Bill Boles and Marty West for the Seniors title. They tied in regulation at 205.
Moss Beecroft and Stan Fischer climbed into third with a 64-207 over a slightly shorter track than the 6,900 yards the top flight played.
