Broadneck's Case delivers surprise, six points in Coaches All-Star win

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Motivation and opportunity always seem to produce surprises in the Maryland Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior All-Star Classic.

That was the case yesterday with Broadneck's Joey Case, who scored a game-high six points on three goals and three assists in the Red and White team's 15-13 win over Black and Gold in the sixth annual game at Loyola College.

Case, who will play at Loyola next spring, was chosen the Offensive Player of the Game. St. Mary's keeper Chris Garrity's 10 saves for the Red and White earned him defensive honors. Red and White backup keeper Mark Bloomquist also played well, getting all of his nine saves in the final period.

"There was a little bit of a rivalry [between the public school guys and the private schools] but mostly it was for fun," said Case, who also took faceoffs yesterday. "Most of all though, we're all the same. It was fun playing with the guys and getting used to the field."

Three of Case's assists were to Mount St. Joseph's Devin Spilker, who scored five times. Friends' Jake Martin, bound for Pennsylvania, scored twice. St. Mary's Chris Summers had a goal and an assist for Red/White.

Johns Hopkins-bound attackman Bobby Benson (McDonogh) led the losing team with four goals and an assist, followed by McDonogh teammate Matt Primm's two goals and two assists.

Playing well defensively for Red/White: Arundel's Greg Wojtech, Annapolis' Paul Haberlein, Gilman's Damien Davis and Friends' keeper Justin Sussman (eight saves). Defensive standouts for Black/Gold: McDonogh's Joe Rosenbaum and Dulaney's Josh Tracy.
