Toddler falls from 3rd-floor window; 15-month-old boy in critical condition

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 15-month-old boy, who was at home with his 2-year-old sister, fell from a third-floor window yesterday in West Baltimore and was critically injured, police said.

Marteece Jenkins, who lives in a three-story unit in the 1600 block of Spray Court in the Gilmor Homes public housing complex, suffered a fractured skull, back injuries and internal bleeding and was in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital pediatric intensive care unit, said Lt. Gregory Eads of the Western District.

Eads said Marteece went through a window screen about 1 p.m., fell at least 30 feet to the concrete pavement and was found by passers-by, who called police and the Fire Department.

His sister was unhurt and was staying with family members, pending a review of the incident by the Baltimore Department of Social Services, Eads said.

Eads said the mother was taken into custody when she arrived at the home and was being interviewed by child abuse detectives.

It was not immediately known where the mother had been.

"Due to the child's injuries, the homicide squad is investigating the incident," Eads said.
