Elizabeth Sherman Grey, a breeder of horses and sheep, died Sunday of heart failure at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Springs, where she had lived since 1993. She was 89.

A 40-year resident of Woodbine in Howard County, Mrs. Grey bred horses for fox hunting and hornless Poled Dorset sheep at Grey's Landing, her 130-acre farm. She had been active in several agricultural and young farmers organizations.

The former Mary Elizabeth Sherman Jones was born in Washington and reared in Olney. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School in Sandy Springs, earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a nursing degree from the Garfield School of Nursing in Washington, but never worked as a nurse.

In 1936, she married Dr. Charles Gibson Grey, a veterinarian. He died in 1986.

She was a member of the Sandy Springs and Pipe Creek Friends meetings.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sandy Springs Friends Meeting on Meeting House Road.

She is survived by two sons, Peter Gibson Grey of Arvada, Colo., and Robert Waters Grey of Concord, N.C.; two daughters, Elizabeth Gibson Towell of Ashton, Idaho, and Margaret Elgar "Peggy" Owens of Haymarket, Va.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
