Maryland drops two to Arizona, is eliminated; Terps manage just 3 hits, fall short of region title

TUCSON, Ariz.--Just one day after upsetting top-seeded Arizona in the NCAA Division I softball tournament, Maryland was swept by the Wildcats and eliminated from the competition yesterday in Tucson, Ariz.

Arizona routed Maryland, 10-0 and 8-0, in the Region 2 finals and advanced to its 12th consecutive College World Series. The Terps (51-23) managed just three hits in the two games, including two by Sarah Putnam.

The first game went just five innings, after Wildcats pitcher Jennie Finch struck out nine. Arizona had nine hits and was led by Lauren Bauer's three RBIs.

The Terps managed just one hit against Becky Lemke in the second game, and Arizona broke it open on Bauer's grand slam in a five-run second inning.
