Terps shut out SW Texas, 5-0, in NCAA opener; Shipman throws 3-hitter to carry No. 21 Maryland; Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Kelly Shipman threw a three-hitter as Maryland shut out Southwest Texas State, 5-0, yesterday in Region 2 of the NCAA Division I softball tournament.

No. 21 Maryland (49-21), seeded third in Region 2, will face Kansas, a 5-1 winner over Southeast Missouri State, in the second round at 7: 30 tonight.

First baseman Kiesha Pickeral dropped a single into left to score Amy Sandler and Michelle Burrell for a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Sandler had reached on a fielder's choice and Burrell had singled.

The Terps added a run in the fourth. Fawna Lackovic reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Sarah Putnam's double down the left-field line. Beth Radford hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Shipman improved to 30-13 with the victory. Amber Mosher took the loss for the Bobcats (34-30).
