Mission: To provide hands-on education and job training for students from diverse backgrounds, with an emphasis on at-risk youth. Using maritime settings, the foundation provides experience-based educational programs. Key objectives of all programs are development, cooperative learning, elevating self-esteem and fostering multicultural exchange. In addition to operating the Living Classrooms East Harbor Campus, the foundation also operates the Baltimore Maritime Museum, the Maritime Education Fleet, Mount Pleasant Farm in Howard County and Fort Carroll Oyster Sanctuary.
Latest accomplishment: April 29, grand opening of the National Historic Seaport, a link to Baltimore's waterfront historic sites. And last year, 38 disadvantaged job training students in the Project SERVE program helped revitalize East Baltimore neighborhoods, including renovating four houses, cleaning up 1 million pounds of trash and boarding up 504 vacant homes.
On the horizon: Completion of the Frederick Douglass-Issac Myers Maritime Park at Thames and Philpot streets, a working maritime railway and shipyard commemorating African-American contributions to maritime history. July 2, the foundation will be instrumental in returning the USS Constellation to the Inner Harbor where the restored historic ship becomes part of the National Historic Seaport. Maritime Magic, the annual fund-raiser, is scheduled for Sept. 10.
