NCAA Div. I first round
No. 5 Georgetown (11-2) vs. Notre Dame (8-5)
Time: Noon
Site: Minnegan Stadium
Outlook: The Hoyas won, 12-8, at Notre Dame on April 10, their third straight over the Fighting Irish, who also stayed with several other heavyweights, losing by two at Loyola and in overtime at Hofstra. This is Georgetown coach Dave Urick's third straight trip to the tournament, and he has gotten great mileage from Greg McCavera, who holds school records for career goals (136), assists (89) and points (225). Boys' Latin products David Ulrich and Tom Glatzel are the top point-getters for Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan. Notre Dame is the Midwest representative for the eighth time. Its only NCAA success came in 1995, when it upset Duke, another No. 5 seed.

No. 6 Delaware (13-2) vs. UMBC (11-3)
Time: 3 p.m.
Site: Minnegan Stadium
Outlook: A historic outcome is assured, since both teams are in search of their first Division I tournament win. The Retrievers made their Division I debut last year, when they lost by a goal to Georgetown. The Blue Hens' only previous appearance came in 1984, when coach Bob Shillinglaw's team was beaten by Johns Hopkins, which at the time was coached by current UMBC boss Don Zimmerman. John Grant (49 goals, 47 assists) leads Delaware, the nation's second-highest scoring team, against a UMBC defense that allowed a school record 7.93 goals per game and held nine opponents to single-digit goals. Andrew Hampson (.654 save percentage) is one of the nation's top goalies.
