JAMES TREVILLIAN, a sophomore at North County High School, recently spoke about Hugh O'Brian Youth -- a leadership skills program -- at the annual installation and awards ceremony luncheon for the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights at Snyder's Willow Grove Restaurant.
James, who lives in Linthicum with his parents, Janice and Jeff Trevillian, was sponsored to attend a Hugh O'Brian Youth seminar by the club.
A member of the National Honor Society, he is involved in track and field program at school. He participates in the Flex Program (Foreign Language Experience) by teaching Spanish to Hilltop Elementary School pupils and is organizing a Fellowship of Christian Athletes at school.
At Hampstead Baptist Church, he is active in the youth group and in the nursery, children's church, sports outreach, and drama team.
The Linthicum Rotary Club will sponsor his participation in a World Affairs Conference this summer in Northern Virginia. Also this summer, he will spend a month in Peru and Ecuador as part of Word of Life, a youth missions trip.
After graduating from North County, James plans to go to college and get a degree in theology and do missionary work in South America.
Winning efforts
The Linthicum Woman's Club belongs to the Southern District of the Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs. Five members of the local club attended the Southern District meeting May 4 in Indian Head: President Virginia Kuhn, Jo Barker, Celeste Riddle, Bernadette Simon, and Irene Wilson. The clubs are judged on their accomplishments for the past year based on annual reports by committee chairwomen.
At Tuesday's luncheon, Kuhn announced the awards the club won, including these first-place prizes:
Conservation Department, Beautification Program: Beautification and garden committee Chairwoman Madeline Hornung prepared the winning report. Club members plant, weed and mulch the grounds of the Benson-Hammond House, community garden and triangles in the community. They also plant around dogwood trees along the bike trail and in plots at Shipley Court, Oak Grove and the Linthicum welcome sign. Club members participate in the Adopt-A-Highway Program.
Literacy Program Literature and Education: Chairwoman Simon prepared the report. Members worked with the Bell Atlantic Telephone Pioneers of America and donated 334 new books to Overlook Elementary School as well as used books. Members volunteered at local schools, too.
Education Department -- Special Projects: Committee chairwoman Simon also did this report about the club's sponsorship of a community leadership workshop for 40 local high school sophomores. The club sponsored a Hugh O'Brian Youth leadership ambassador and awarded four $500 scholarships to high school seniors, two $100 savings bonds to middle school pupils, six dictionaries to elementary pupils as creative arts prizes and award money for art and literature contests.
Women's Health Program: Report prepared by Lynne Marie McGowan, community health and volunteer services chairwoman. Club members volunteered at the Chesapeake Hospice House.
Home Life Department -- Special Projects: McGowan also prepared this winning report on club members visiting nursing homes throughout the year.
Public Affairs Department -- Crime Prevention: McGowan did the report. The club supports two local homeless shelters with proceeds from the annual Prayer Breakfast.
Public Affairs Department -- special projects. Patricia Barrows, public affairs chairwoman, prepared the report. Local political candidates, including the candidates for county executive and district County Council seats, spoke to members. The WCLH is represented at all levels of participation at the historic Benson-Hammond House.
Leadership: Club President Kuhn prepared the report. Members who attended regional conventions shared what they learned with board members. Club members lead other community organizations, arts associations and the historical society. They also hold positions in the MFWC.
Thirteen winning works of art from the local club's art contest were entered in the District Youth Art Contest. Receiving honorable mention were Alexis Shaefer, Lindale/Brooklyn Park Middle Schools; John Wyrwas, Arthur Slade Regional Catholic School; and Emily Green, Meade High School.
Anne Skillman's valentine wreath came third in the Maryland federation's craft contest. Riddle received certificates of excellence in the district poetry and painting contests. At the state level, Riddle's poem earned first place. Her artwork received first and second place as well as best in show.
Member honored
The Linthicum club honored member Adeline Bradshaw at the luncheon with a corsage, a certificate and recognition for her outstanding volunteer work in the community over many years.
A member since the early 1950s, she served 18 years as treasurer and as club pianist and with Jimmie Baker formed a committee of two that prepared and served luncheons for club meetings. She is on the music committee and is the club newsletter mailer.
As a member of St. John Lutheran Church, she serves in many capacities. For 31 years, she has shared her musical talent with the St. John's Cooperative Nursery School. Playing her accordion, she has led the children's Halloween parade and plays for the annual Mickey Mouse birthday show and, dressed in her clown costume, at the annual children's circus. She also plays for the nursery school's Easter Parade, Mother's Day shows and graduation programs. Most weeks she performs for the Sunday School classes and in the Handbell Choir, delivers altar flowers to shut-ins, and delivers food for Meals on Wheels. She also plays for the annual Vacation Bible School, some chapel services and an occasional wedding.
Bradshaw and her husband, Bob Bradshaw, have lived in Linthicum for 52 years. They have two children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mystery dinner
A mystery dinner will be featured at the regular meeting of the District 32 Democratic Club on Thursday at the Ferndale Senior Center, 7205 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. The dinner will be served at 7 p.m. for $4. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. Speakers will include state Sen. James E. "Ed" DeGrange Sr., state Del. Mary Ann Love and Theodore J. "Ted" Sophocleus.

Meeting change
The Old Brooklyn Park Improvement Association has changed the date of its next meeting. Because of construction at the Brooklyn Park Elementary School, Morgan and 14th streets, the meeting has been moved to 7 p.m. May 25.
