Some streets in the Mount Vernon area will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for the annual May Flower Mart, city officials said.

Charles Street will be closed between Centre and Madison streets.

Monument Street will be closed between Calvert and Cathedral streets.

From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., parking restrictions will be in effect in the area, with cars towed on sections of Centre, Charles, Monument, Madison, Calvert and Biddle streets, Park Avenue and Mount Vernon Place.

A suggested alternate northbound route from downtown is Calvert Street, according to the Department of Public Works.

"Most people downtown should find it easy to take the detours and avoid the traffic closures," said Kurt L. Kocher, public works spokesman.
