Exercise today to shut Fort Meade gate at Llewellyn Avenue and Route 175

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Soldiers at Fort Meade will perform a security exercise today that will force the post gate at Llewellyn Avenue and Route 175 to close for most of the day.

The exercise, code-named Blue Canary, will simulate an attack with a chemical agent and bombs, according to post officials.

Military police will do heightened security checks at the Llewellyn gate from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the gate will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chamberlin, Chisolm and 85th Medical Battalion avenues as well as Fifth and Eighth streets on post will be affected by the exercise as well. Motorists should use Mapes Road to enter and leave the post.

Also today, Fort Meade will hold a restoration advisory board meeting during which citizens can ask questions about the Army's proposed plan for the last portion of environmental cleanup at Tipton Airport.

Representatives from the post, federal Environmental Protection Agency, Maryland Department of the Environment and Baltimore District Corps of Engineers will join contractors in the main conference room of the new EPA building at 7 p.m.

The proposed plan addresses ground water cleanup around the air field and at two inactive landfills.

The new EPA building is on Mapes Road, off Route 175.
