Fresh strawberries taste best when eaten at room temperature the same day they are purchased but can be refrigerated, unwashed and unhulled, for up to three days. Arrange in a single layer on paper- towel-lined trays to prevent bruising and cover loosely with plastic.
To remove field dust and reduce the possibility of agricultural or bacterial contamination, wash berries before eating. Rinse under cool running water for 15 to 30 seconds; drain and pat dry. Use a small, sharp knife or strawberry huller to remove leafy cap, stem and white core.
