Downs lifts the Mount to MAAC crown, 6-5; Goal with 4: 12 left ends Fairfield's 3-year reign; State

Sophomore Matt Downs scored an extra-man goal with 4: 12 left in the game to give Mount St. Mary's the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's championship yesterday with a 6-5 win over three-time defending champion Fairfield at Fairfield, Conn.

The Stags (8-7, 6-2) jumped to a two-goal lead in the third period before Trevor Harvey scored to pull the Mountaineers (10-5, 8-0) within one 10 seconds before the quarter break. Brian Cox's goal tied the game at 5 with 4: 50 left, setting the scene for Downs' game-winner.

Anne Arundel CC 9, Essex CC 8: Peter Ludlam scored with one minute left in the second overtime to give the Pioneers (15-1) a win over the visiting Knights (10-4) in the Region XX championship game.

Essex led 8-6 with 11 minutes left in regulation, but the Pioneers' Correll Caulfield scored to make it 8-7, then Gary DeGroat tied the game with five minutes left to force overtime.

Greg Arbacas led all scorers with five goals for the Knights.

Women

Washington College 12, Gettysburg 9: Junior Jordan Holt scored a game-high four goals to lead the visiting Shorewomen (12-5, 6-3) past the host Bullets (8-7, 6-3) in their Centennial Conference finale, giving the Shorewomen a school record for victories in a season, topping the previous mark, set in 1989.

Maggy Kilroy (Towson) added three goals and an assist for the winners, Monica DeBenedictis had one goal and two assists and Heather Cranmer had a goal and an assist.
