Terence Morris, the top returning basketball player for Maryland, will undergo surgery Friday to repair a fractured bone in his right foot.

Morris, a sophomore forward from Frederick who was an all-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team selection, fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot on Thursday while playing at a campus rec center. A campus spokesman said that the fracture will be repaired by surgically inserting a screw into the bone.

Morris will be in a walking boot cast for two to three weeks, and a complete recovery is expected in six to eight weeks.

Morris and Steve Francis, the junior guard who last week announced that he would pass on his final season of eligibility, were named co-Most Valuable Players at the Terps' awards banquet last night. Morris also won the Charles "Buck" Williams-Len Elmore Award as the team's top rebounder.

The following awards were also given: most assists, Terrell Stokes; outstanding free-throw shooter, Juan Dixon; 1,000-point scorer, Obinna Ekezie; Career Achievement Award, Laron Profit; WBAL Academic Award, Matt Hahn; Maryland Basketball Service Award, Johnny Holliday.
