Percy Williams Schall Jr., 79, insurance executive
Percy Williams Schall Jr., an insurance executive and retired colonel in the Army Reserve, died Friday of a heart attack at home in Melrose Apartments in Homeland. He was 79.
He was regional manager of Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. from 1954 until he retired in 1972. He was a former president of the Baltimore Life Underwriters' Association.
Born and raised on East 33rd Street, he graduated from City College in 1937 and Loyola College in 1941. He also was a graduate of the Purdue School of Life Insurance Marketing. During World War II, the Army officer was transport commander of the Victory ship New York University on the North Atlantic run. After the war, as a reserve officer, he established the Army Reserve transportation center at Curtis Bay, where he commanded ships, barges, tugboats and a trucking unit. He retired in 1972 with the rank of colonel.
In 1943, he married Ruth Fanseen, who died in 1988.
He was a past president of the Mount Washington Club and was a member of the Baltimore Country Club and the Kiwanis Club.
He was a member and usher for 30 years at Grace United Methodist Church, 5407 N. Charles St., where services with full military honors will be held at 1: 30 p.m. today.
He is survived by his daughter, Patti Fanseen Schall of Homeland; and a sister, Anna Mae Hanshart of Cockeysville.
Edward J. Turner, 73, underground utility worker
Edward J. Turner, a retired underground utility worker, died Friday of cancer at home in Jessup. He was 73.
Born in Howard County near Ellicott City, he worked all his life for local construction companies.
During World War II, he served in the Army in Europe.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Stephen's AME Church, 7741 Mayfield Ave., Elkridge.
He is survived by his mother, Edna Howard of Jessup; a brother, William Howard of Baltimore; two sisters, Irene Washington of Monterey, Calif., and Louise Moss of the Bronx, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.
