Sylvan Learning Systems Inc., the Baltimore-based educational services company, has been named the year's top franchiser by a national franchising trade group.
The American Association of Franchisees and Dealers (AAFD) singles out one franchiser a year based on several criteria -- the most important of which is the relationship between a company and its franchisees, said Bob Purvin, AAFD chairman.
Patty Miller, senior vice president of franchise services for Sylvan, said the company's frequent communications with its franchisees distinguishes it from other franchisers.
"We're doing what's right, not only for each and every business but for people who invest in those businesses as well," she said.
Sylvan, which provides computer-based testing, information technology instruction, teacher training, student tutoring and English language instruction, meets quarterly with a 10-member board that represents franchisees and holds an international conference for franchisees annually.
Barry Miller, president of the Sylvan Learning Franchise Owners Association, said Doug Becker, the company's president and co-chief executive officer, in 1991 pledged to work with franchisees to meet mutual goals.
"Since that time, Sylvan's tutoring business has grown dramatically, and Sylvan is fast becoming one of the best and most successful franchises," he said.
