City police major graduates from FBI training academy

Baltimore police Maj. Kathleen Patek has graduated from an FBI training academy designed for law enforcement officers who are targeted for advancement in their departments.

Patek, a 24-year veteran who commands the Crimes Against Persons unit, was one of 269 people to graduate Friday and was one of 16 women accepted into the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Va. She was the sole representative from the Baltimore Police Department.

The 11-week annual program offers training in management and investigative skills and is designed for officers "who may eventually serve in executive-level positions in their agencies," the FBI says.

Man, 23, is fatally shot on street in Lauraville

Police were investigating yesterday the fatal shooting of a man, 23, who was killed Monday night on a street in the Lauraville section of Northeast Baltimore, about five blocks from his home.

Kamal Branham, 23, of the 2400 block of E. Cold Spring Lane was shot once in the upper body as he walked in the 2900 block of Shirey Ave. about 10: 30 p.m. and pronounced dead on arrival at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, said Agent Angelique Cook-Hayes, a police spokeswoman.

NAACP branch to sponsor family fun day April 10

The Baltimore branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is sponsoring a family fun day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 10 in front of its headquarters at 8 W. 26th St. in Charles Village.

The event will include food, education and a performance by the Heaven 600 Gospel Choir while promoting the NAACP's national convention to be held in Baltimore in July 2000. Information: 410-366- 3300.

Schools to hold job fair for teachers, employees

TIMONIUM -- Baltimore County public schools will hold an exposition and job fair from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 14 at the Timonium fairgrounds exhibition hall.

The school system anticipates hiring about 800 teachers for the 1999-2000 school year in all subject areas and encourages potential applicants to attend the fair. Aspiring teachers should take resumes and will have the chance to complete interviews.

The event is free, and registration is not required. The job fair will include an information booth for classified, clerical and technical employees on job opportunities and career options.

Women's commission honors three for community service

TOWSON -- The Baltimore County Commission for Women recently honored three women for their community service.

Anne Lee, president of the county chapter of the League of Women Voters, was named Woman of the Year. She is a member and past president of Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, where she works on the issues of hunger and homelessness.

Also honored were Alexis Walters, a senior honors student at Loch Raven High School who volunteers at two elementary schools, and Jacqueline Duru, a foster mother who works with the county Department of Social Services and set up a recreational and educational program for young girls in the Essex-Middle River area.
