Gilman stuns No. 1 Lakers on Faraone's goal, 15-14; Late runs by Boys' Latin repelled by Pfeiffer, Davis

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Andrew Faraone's unassisted goal from 20 yards with 1: 24 to play was the game-winner in fifth-ranked Gilman's 15-14 upset yesterday at No. 1 Boys' Latin in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference clash.

Gilman (2-1) was down a man with 2: 19 to play when the Lakers' offense threw the ball away. Faraone (two goals, one assist) brought it across midfield, circled behind keeper Ryan Lafferty (15 saves) and shook a defender before firing in a one-hopper.

"Their defenseman came out and he tripped," Faraone said. "So I went to the goal and stuck one."

With 54 seconds to play, keeper Jay Pfeiffer (17 saves) made a point-blank deflection of a shot by the Lakers' Dan Lamonica (two goals, two assists). And with 17 seconds left, Gilman's Damien Davis checked the ball from Jamie Daue (one goal, two assists).

"Jamie Daue had the ball, and I liked the matchup, so I went after him," said Davis.

Gilman failed on several defensive clears early, one of which led to Lamonica's unassisted goal that trimmed Gilman's lead to 6-5, midway through the first half.

Pfeifer thwarted three straight point-blank shots, however, as Gilman built an 8-5 lead on goals by Ryan Boyle (two goals, two assists) and Andrew Lucas (three goals, one assist).

Gilman's Kevin Boland (four goals, one assist) led all scorers. Jesse Kohler (one goal, three assists) and Brenden Schenning (two goals) also contributed.

Chris Edwards (three goals, one assist) and Michael Thomas (three goals) led the Lakers (5-1), who took the lead only twice, at 10-9 and 11-10, in a game that was tied nine times.

Boys' Latin's Hunter Lochte (two goals, one assist), Dan Berger (one, two) and R. C. Reed (one, two) also scored.

Boys' Latin was coming off Friday's overtime upset of then-No. 1 McDonogh. Gilman was coming off Thursday's 9-8 loss to then-No. 6 St. Mary's. Gilman coach Dave Allen was a Gilman assistant last season to John Tucker, who now is a Boys' Latin assistant.

"Coach Tucker told us they'd probably run similar offense plays to ours," Edwards said. "We knew what they were going to do, but they [still] put it to us."

No. 4 St. Mary's 9, No. 7 Calvert Hall 8: Matt Lacascio and Matt Lahman scored 29 seconds apart late in the fourth quarter to lift the Saints (5-0, 2-0) over the host Cardinals (2-1, 0-1) in an MIAA A Conference game.
