Billboards steer motorists toward God

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It's not exactly a bolt of lightning or a burning bush.

But if the new "God speaking" billboard campaign can get people thinking about the Almighty instead of topless joints or cold brews, then its supporters will consider it a success.

"If you take a look at what's happening in our society today, it's not a pretty sight," said Andy Smith, president of the Fort Lauderdale-based advertising agency that developed the campaign at the request of an anonymous Floridian. "It's time to get people to start thinking about God and the rules God set forth."

The nationwide program was kicked off this year in Dallas with more than 120 billboards and eventually will spread to 10,000 locations in 200 U.S. markets. The program features stark black billboards with white-lettered messages signed simply by "God."

One billboard appears to chastise motorists: "Keep using my name in vain. I'll make rush hour longer." Another entreats married couples: "Loved the wedding, invite me to the marriage." A third message urges: "Follow me."
