School board OKs purchase of land for Woodlawn elementary

WOODLAWN -- The Baltimore County school board has approved purchasing about 13 acres to build an elementary school.

The board agreed to spend $850,000 for the site, which is on the south side of Dogwood Road near Rolling Run Drive.

The 600-pupil school is planned to relieve crowding at Chadwick and Hebbville elementary schools.

Tax assistance offered at five libraries this week

TOWSON -- Income tax assistance will be available this week at five branches of the Baltimore County Public Library system.

Trained volunteers from the American Association of Retired Persons will be available to complete basic income tax returns for people with incomes up to $30,000.

Help will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the White Marsh and Woodlawn branches; from 5: 30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Essex branch; from 10: 15 a.m. to 1: 15 p.m. Fridayat the Cockeysville branch; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Arbutus branch. Appointments should be made by calling or visiting the libraries.

Fax of Life program gains finance-related mentors

LANSDOWNE -- The Fax of Life program has gained a group of electronic mentors for nine county schools: people in finance-related careers.

Students exchange career questions and answers with more than 75 mentors by fax. The program is sponsored by Action Business Systems Inc., which donates office equipment and software to the schools.

The 13 finance-related mentors -- from Bank of Maryland, Crestar Bank, Commercial Credit Co., First Mariner Bank, Harbor Federal Savings Bank, NationsBank, Provident Bank of Maryland, Travelers Bank & Trust, Creative Benefits Services and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development -- will be particularly helpful to students in Lansdowne High School's finance magnet program.

Russian police officers visit city in exchange program

Seven police officers from St. Petersburg, Russia, began a two-week visit to Baltimore on Saturday to study American policing as part of a law enforcement exchange program.

The exchange is sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the U.S. State Department International Law Enforcement Exchange Program. Seven Baltimore police officers will visit St. Petersburg from May 30 to June 12.

Police identify man, 24, as victim in fatal shooting

Police have identified Che Antonio Carter, 24, of the 2500 block of Frederick Ave. in Southwest Baltimore as the man who was fatally shot Thursday in East Baltimore.

Police said Carter was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car in the 2300 block of Greenmount Ave. about 3: 15 p.m. when a man fired several shots into the vehicle, hitting Carter in the upper body and killing him.

Police said a suspect was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, but his identity was not available yesterday. The man was being held without bail at the Central Booking and Intake Center, pending a bail review hearing today.

Historical society seeks volunteer guides for tours

The Maryland Historical Society at 201 W. Monument St. needs volunteer guides for tours through museum exhibits. Tour guides will be trained to discuss period rooms, portraits, ship models, dioramas of Maryland history and the original manuscript of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Historians, curators and museum staff will begin training guides this month. Tour guides are expected to attend training sessions and give one tour a week, on the day of their choice.

Volunteers are also needed for weekend and evening programs. Hours are flexible. Information: 410-685-3750, Ext. 336.
