Mary Salter Ainsworth, 85, psychologist, art collector

Mary Salter Ainsworth, a psychologist who made important studies in the relationships between mothers and their infants while she worked at the Johns Hopkins University in the 1960s, died of a stroke March 21 at her home in Charlottesville, Va. She was 85.

Born in Glendale, Calif., she was educated at the University of Toronto and moved to Baltimore in 1955 when she joined the Hopkins faculty.

In 1962, she began a study of infant-caregiver attachments. She was named a full professor a year later.

In 1974, she joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she continued her research.

She was awarded the American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for life achievement in psychology in 1988.

During her Baltimore years, she lived in Ruxton and spent summers in Cape Cod. There she met Baltimore artist Herman Maril and began collecting his works. She has donated a large Maril collection to the University of Maryland, College Park.

Services were held Friday at the University of Virginia.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Sloan of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Timothy R. Donahue, 65, Bethlehem Steel millwright

Timothy R. Donahue, a retired Bethlehem Steel Corp. millwright, died Friday of lung disease at his Kent Island home. He was 65.

Born in Brandsville, Mo., he came to Baltimore as a child and grew up on West Lanvale Street. As a young man, he went to work at Bethlehem's Sparrows Point plant. He retired in 1991 after 34 years there.

He moonlighted as a cabinetmaker and followed Maryland racing at the Laurel and Pimlico tracks.

Mr. Donahue married Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Riddle in 1954, and they lived in Pasadena. She died in 1981.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gonce Funeral Home, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie Hortopan of Annapolis and Kelly Germershausen of Kent Island; two brothers, Jack Donahue of Linthicum and Michael Donahue of Dundalk; six sisters, Kate Ward and Frances Ferguson, both of Springfield, Mo., Patricia Tunstall and Marie Hill, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Peggy Durbin of Ocala, Fla., and Anna Mattheisz of Ocean View, Del.; and eight grandchildren.
