In top form, Terps women defeat ODU; Sommar's four goals help No. 1 UM earn 16-9 rout; State

Kristin Sommar had four goals and Christie Jenkins three as top-ranked Maryland defeated Old Dominion, 16-9, yesterday in women's lacrosse in Norfolk, Va.

Sommar had three goals as the Terps (8-0) built a 9-5 lead at intermission. Maryland scored the first four goals of the second half -- two by Courtney Hobbs -- to extend its lead to 13-3 with 15: 52 left.

Duke 14, Johns Hopkins 6: Tricia Martin scored a game-high six goals and added an assist as the Blue Devils (6-1) rolled at Homewood Field. Danielle Maschuci's three goals led the Blue Jays (4-1).

Martin had five goals to help Duke to a 6-3 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils then scored six unanswered goals, including three by Kelly Dirks (Annapolis), in the first 17 minutes of the second half to push their lead to 12-3.

UMBC 25, Quinnipiac 4: Behind five goals from Debbie Krastel, the host Retrievers (2-4, 1-0) overwhelmed the Braves (1-3, 0-3 Northeast Conference).

UMBC broke from a tie at 3 with five consecutive goals and led 12-4 at halftime.

Mount St. Mary's 19, Sacred Heart 9: Freshman Amy Harris scored four of her six goals in the second half to help the Mountaineers (4-3, 1-0 Northeast Conference) win in Emmitsburg.

Junior Lacey Morley had five goals and an assist for the Mount, which outscored the Pioneers (1-2, 0-1) by 12-3 in the second half.

Middlebury 13, St. Mary's 12, OT: Julia Bergofsky scored 1: 11 into sudden-death overtime and the visiting Panthers (4-0) claimed a non-conference win. Bergofsky led all scorers with four goals.

Bergofsky gave Middlebury a 10-9 lead with 51 seconds left in regulation but the Seahawks (5-1) tied it 16 seconds later on a goal by Mary Davies.

Goucher 21, Dickinson 7: Cara Tracey had five goals and Lauren Manekin (four goals, three assists) seven points to lead the host Gophers (4-3) over the Red Devils (0-3). Goucher led 14-6 in the second half before adding seven straight goals.

Villa Julie 12, Kean 11: Cari Baker scored five goals and Laura Higgs, Nikki Racilla and Keri Jacobs each scored twice to help the visiting Mustangs (3-3) slip by the Cougars (2-3).

Washington College 15, Muhlenberg 7: Maggy Kilroy (five goals, one assist) and Monica DeBenedictis (three goals) combined for nine points and the hosts (4-1, 2-1) never trailed in a Centennial Conference win.

Men

Marymount 14, Goucher 6: The Saints (4-3, 2-1) used 4-0 scoring runs in the first and third quarters to beat the host Gophers (2-6, 0-3 Capital Athletic Conference). Tim Asher led Goucher (two goals, three assists).

Lynchburg 16, Western Maryland 9: Senior Russ Sliger scored four of his five goals in a span of 98 seconds covering the third and fourth quarters to lead the Hornets (6-1), No. 11 in Division III, to a non-league win in Westminster.

Anne Arundel 9, Nassau 8: Brian Barros scored with 1: 51 left as the host Pioneers (6-1), the top-ranked team in Division I junior college, edged the No. 2 Lions (4-2).
