Eugene Lloyd Earle, 81, war veteran, civil engineer
Eugene Lloyd Earle, 81, head of Baltimore County's materials testing lab from 1963 to 1968 and a much-decorated World War II veteran, died Saturday of Alzheimer's disease at his home in Paranaque, a city in the Philippines about seven miles from Manila.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a civil engineering graduate of the University of Oregon.
He served in the Army's 9th Infantry during World War II and earned the Bronze Star at the Battle of the Bulge, the Silver Star at the Battle of Remagen Bridge and the Purple Heart in North Africa.
In 1963, he moved to Lutherville to work for Baltimore County but left after five years to serve in Vietnam as a civilian engineer.
His marriage in 1946 to the former Mary Bruce Crane ended in divorce in 1977.
Funeral services are pending.
Mr. Earle is survived by his wife, Remedios Earle, whom he married in 1977; two daughters, Beverly Jean Earle of Buffalo, Wyo., and Susan Vera Earle of Baltimore; four sons, Michael Earle of Erie, Pa., and Eugene, Edward and Ernest Earle, all of Paranaque; and four grandchildren.
Louise R. Levy, 83, Goucher College trustee
Lousie R. Levy, a homemaker who was active for many years in the affairs of Goucher College, died Wednesday of cancer at Broadmead retirement community. She was 83.
Mrs. Levy, a former resident of Tenafly, N.J., had resided at the Cockeysville retirement community since 1994.
Born Louise Redfield, she earned her bachelor's degree in Romance languages from Goucher in 1937 and did graduate work at New York University.
Mrs. Levy's six-decade association with Goucher College included serving as a trustee and Alumnae Council president.
In 1939, she married Laurance M. Levy Sr., who died in 1984.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Goucher College Chapel, Dulaney Valley Road in Towson.
She is survived by a son, Laurance M. "Laddie" Levy Jr. of Lutherville; a daughter, Louise L. Reddi Ford of Brookline, Mass.; and three grandsons.
Private funeral services for former Baltimore Orioles manager and coach Calvin Edwin Ripken Sr. will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 110 W. Bel Air Ave. in Aberdeen. The funeral is open to family members and close friends.
Visitation hours are 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Monday at the Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, 333 S. Parke St. in Aberdeen.
