Mat champs
By winning the Class 1A-2A state wrestling tournament earlier this month, Franklin brought to seven the number of state tournament crowns Baltimore County teams have won since the event began in 1970.
Hereford, Eastern Tech and Owings Mills also have won titles, with the latter, under present coach Guy Pritzker, taking crowns in 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1996. Hereford won the first title in 1970, and, until 1980, only one team champion was crowned for the entire state.
Since then, however, both big (Class 3A-4A) and small (1A-2A) school team titles have been awarded. Eastern Tech won the big-schools crown in 1987.
Anne Arundel County leads the state with 12 tournament titles, followed by Prince George's County with 10, Baltimore County and Howard County (five).
Anne Arundel remains the only county to sweep both tournaments in the same season: In 1993, Old Mill won the Class 3A-4A tournament and Northeast, Class 1A-2A.
