Yuri Temirkanov directs the BSO
Music director-designate Yuri Temirkanov leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in four concerts today through Saturday and Tuesday at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. The program includes Berlioz's Beatrice and Benedict Overture, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Barber's Violin Concerto with violinist Pamela Frank. Apple-pie-eating contest

Historic Showdown
C.S. Forester's classic "Horatio Hornblower" stories come to life Saturday at the Inner Harbor, when seafaring warriors and cutthroat pirates exchange gun and cannon fire during a re-enactment of the Napoleonic War between two tall ships, The Kalmar Nyckel and The Pride of Many -- guests this weekend of Sail Baltimore, the city's committee for visiting ships. A dockside open house with guided tours of the vessels preceeds the battle, and afterward, an encampment of re-enactors features pirates, mock sword fights, chanty singing, storytelling and knot-tying lessons. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the open house; 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the mock battles; and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the encampment.
