Musicals on the boards at local schools

DRAMA AND MUSIC pupils at Severna Park Middle School are tuning up for their version of Lerner and Lowe's "Guys and Dolls" at 7 p.m. today and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Eighth-graders take the lead roles, with Jennifer Seyer as Sarah Brown, Charlie Estberg as Sky Masterson, Kristin Kushner as Adelaide and Ryan Locke as Nathan Detroit.

Directed by Kathleen Gabriele, with music directed by Kerry Salisbury, the 1950s Broadway musical features such familiar tunes as "Luck Be a Lady Tonight" and "Bushel and a Peck."

McGee Wilbur, a junior at Severna Park High School, assists the director, and Courtney Fitch, a senior at Severna Park High, assists the musical director.

Tickets are $5 for sixth-graders through adults and $3 for kindergartners through fifth-graders. Children age 4 and younger are admitted free.

At Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, the stage is set with palm trees and filled with islanders and sailors for the school's production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" at 7: 30 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Directed by English teacher and drama director Patti Scott, the production stars seniors Jodi Adkins as Nellie Forbush and Dan Sontag as Emile de Becque.

James Flanagan appears as Lt. Joe Cable, and Jessica MacMillan tackles the role of Bloody Mary.

Severn School christens its new Price Auditorium at 8 p.m. April 16 and 17 with a student production of "Pippin."

The auditorium is part of a new, 29,000-square-foot student center that also houses an amphi-theater-style lecture hall, a dining hall, conference room, bookstore, offices, classrooms and labs.

The show will be directed by J. Ernest Green of the Annapolis Chorale and Sharie Valerio of Colonial Players and Talent Machine.

Good Friday service

If you prefer beautiful music in a religious setting, you'll want to attend the community ecumenical Good Friday service from noon to 3 p.m. April 2 at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Benfield Road in Severna Park.

Music will be provided by ensembles from participating churches.

Speakers will be George Innis and Jerry Long, pastors of Severna Park United Methodist Church; Edward Staub of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church; John DeBeer of St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church; Bruce Thompson of Pasadena United Methodist Church; Maureen Morris of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Fred Eichner, host minister from Our Shepherd.
