Egg hunt, scavenger hunt scheduled for April 3 at nature center

THE BALTIMORE SUN

AN OUTDOORS THEME is planned for an egg hunt for youngsters and a scavenger hunt for older children to be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 3 at Pine Valley Nature Center, Manchester.

The park is at the end of Wilhelm Lane, off York Street, opposite the Manchester Carnival grounds. The public is welcome. Admission is free. Both hunts will have a natural flair. Natural plant dyes are being used to color the shells of the 200 real eggs.

The eggs are being dyed by a Manchester Boy Scout troop near the nature center. Nature center members will show how the eggs were boiled with red cabbage leaves, onion skins, or turmeric spice to color them.

The egg hunt is planned for children in groups infants through age 4, and ages 5 through 9.

For the scavenger hunt, riddles and maps will challenge teams of children, mixing ages 10 through 15, who will search trails to find a hidden rabbit.

"The scavenger hunt is like an egg hunt, but scaled to older children," said Sharon Hughes, park board treasurer and organizer of the hunt.

Clues have been worded to link wildlife, trees and designated areas of the park.

Prizes will be given for finding the most eggs for each age group, and being part of the winning scavenger hunt team.

Hampstead Elementary art

Students of Barbara Hammond, art teacher at Hampstead Elementary, are exhibiting paintings in brilliant colors at the Carroll County Youth Art Month exhibit at Carrolltown Center, Eldersburg.

Third-grade pupils studied Mexican patterns and created patterns in tempera. J. T. Cummings painted a large shark among many small fish for "Dinnertime," and Christina Reginaldi created a border pattern for "Pink Bird."

The composition of paintings by Matisse led to fifth grade tempera paintings such as "A Bright Interior" by Lorien Gordon, "Patterned Lady" by Kristin Scherbarth, "Colorful Patterns" by Daren Porter, "Purple Curtains" by Pamela Brady and "View from a Window" by Jamie Klingler.

Second-grade pupils sketched people in motion using tempera paint, including "At the Beach" by Deanna Campbell and "Ballerina" by Megan Lowman.

Scratchboard, in which black ink is scratched bit by bit away from a white subsurface, was used to draw scenes of medieval life by the fourth grade, including "Court Jester" by Brett Messiora, "Medieval Lady" by Jena Creamer, "Knight in Armor" by Brian Bickel and "Medieval Princess" by Molly Scheming.

Foil repousse, a metal tooling process for a relief effect, also on exhibit by the fourth grade, includes "The Old Castle" by Jesse Holbrook, "Medieval Castle" by Eric Hoppa and "King's Castle" by Brooke King.

Based upon a study of Georgia O'Keeffe, flower close-ups were the subject of prints by first-grade pupils Megan Resch, Jared Mays, Jordan Hoover and Bradley Diehl.

A second-grade study of Australian aboriginal X-ray art led to paintings on simulated bark in tempera. Exhibited are "Big Fish" by Cody Unkart and "Two Turtles" by Kati Hoffman.

Patterned yarn weaving is shown by third-grade pupils Jessica Rafferty, Bobby Ford and Ashton Burk. A paper sculpture mask is on exhibit by Doug Mace, grade three; and a chalk drawing, "Pumpkins at Night" by Blair Darsch, grade three.

Mulch fund-raiser

Boy Scout Troop 9 is again offering the sale of shredded hardwood mulch. Contact Hampstead Scouts Clay Fisher, Scott Laderer, Storm Blizzard, Chris Spriggs, Paul Dwyer and Matthew Clark to order mulch.

"This activity will help our Scouts earn their way to summer camp," said mulch sale organizer Maureen Laderer.

Orders are being taken, paid in advance, before April 10 for delivery April 17. Mulch can be picked up from Spring Garden Elementary on Boxwood Drive or Hickory Hollow Farms at 3335 Emory Road, or Scouts will deliver.

For mulch without delivery, the price is $20 per cubic yard. The price including delivery is $30 per cubic yard, or $25 per yard for an order of three yards or more. A yard is 3 feet square, measured as one bucket from a front-end loader.

The troop is sponsored by Emory United Methodist Church.
