Highlights and lowlights from the Orioles' 7-3 victory over the Montreal Expos in Jupiter, Fla.
UP -- Juan Guzman: His sinker was working, and the Expos were flailing.
UP -- Mike Fetters: Has incorporated a slider, which he used with confidence.
DOWN -- Gabe Molina: Didn't exactly slam the door shut in the ninth. Was more of a gentle push.
UP -- Will Clark: Two hits and two RBIs. The Expos couldn't keep him off base. Raffy might be ready by Opening Day.
UP -- Mike Murphy: Played all three outfield positions and got on base the same number of times. Rochester-bound, but impressive.
UP -- Mike Bordick: Goes 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. He's scorching.
The bats
The Orioles finished with nine hits, including two each by Bordick, Clark and Murphy. Albert Belle had an RBI double in the third, when the Orioles scored four times. Willis Otanez and Danny Clyburn singled. The Orioles stranded 11 runners, but it didn't come back to haunt them.
The arms
Guzman went five innings, allowing one run and three hits. He walked one, struck out five, and called it his best outing of the spring. The only run came on a homer to catcher Chris Widger in the fifth. Ricky Bones, Fetters and Mike Timlin combined for three shutout innings, the only hit allowed by Fetters, who struck out two. Molina entered in the ninth and allowed a run on two doubles and a walk.
The rest
Montreal pitchers issued seven walks, including five by Ted Lilly. Chris Hoiles dug out a low throw to first from third baseman Otanez, ending the sixth. Former Oriole Anthony Telford allowed a run on two hits in the ninth. The Orioles have won four of five going into tonight's home game against the New York Mets.
Quote of the day
"We always talk about the Oriole Way. He was the one who indoctrinated every one of us who came in. I just wish him the best and the family the best. My prayers are with the Ripken family right now." -- Manager Ray Miller, on Cal Ripken Sr., who is gravely ill.
