Highlights and lowlights from the Orioles' 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
UP -- Brady Anderson: Launched a three-run homer to center field in the second inning. He led the Grapefruit League with 11 walks before yesterday, then drew his 12th.
DOWN -- Albert Belle: A fly ball into the gap was turned into a triple as Belle had trouble getting over, then fumbled it on the warning track.
DOWN -- Official scorer: Has to be able to recognize an error. Lenny Webster got off easy.
EVEN -- Willis Otanez: Homer and single were nice, but those two throwing errors had bystanders running for cover each time he fielded a ball.
UP -- Mike Bordick: Muscled up in the first inning with a blast that bounced off the top of the clock beside the scoreboard in left-center field. Also walked, but his average actually dropped to .387.
UP -- Mike Timlin: Strings together two solid outings, this time pitching two scoreless innings.
The bats
Three of the Orioles' eight hits were home runs, by Bordick, Otanez and Anderson. The rest were singles by Belle, Otanez, Webster, Jeff Reboulet and Lyle Mouton. Anderson's three RBIs gave him the team lead with eight. The Orioles manufactured a run in the seventh on a delayed double-steal, with Mouton scoring and slow-footed Harold Baines easing into second as the throw from catcher George Williams sailed into center field.
The arms
Mike Mussina went five innings and said he could have come out for the sixth. Two of the four runs off him were unearned. He allowed seven hits and struck out one. Most important, his arm felt good. Timlin came in earlier than usual and allowed one hit in two innings, striking out one. Ricky Bones struck out two in a scoreless eighth, and Arthur Rhodes got three ground-ball outs in the ninth after falling behind 3-0 to the leadoff hitter.
The rest
B. J. Surhoff was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Torii Hunter on Reboulet's single in the second. He barely avoided stepping on Reboulet's bat a few feet up the line. Either catcher A. J. Pierzynski or umpire Ken Kaiser should have moved it. Reboulet was knocked down twice by Bob Wells in the sixth inning. He glared at the veteran reliever the second time, then struck out. He continued to look at Wells, his lips moving, as he returned to the dugout and slammed his bat into the rack. The Orioles have won three straight going into today's game against St. Louis in Jupiter.
