50 years ago: The Board of Education of Carroll County held its regular meeting on March 8. The superintendent reported that the construction of the Robert Moton Colored School was proceeding under the general contractor Allen F. Feeser. -- Democratic Advocate, March 18, 1949.
50 years ago: About 25 businessmen of Hampstead met in the showroom of the Hampstead Implement and Supply Company on South Main Street Wednesday night in the interest of the temporarily organized body of merchants, preparatory to a permanent organization. The group accepted the bylaws as submitted by the committee appointed to draw them up, and formed a permanent organization to be called the Hampstead Chamber of Commerce, Inc. A committee which had been appointed to work with other civic organizations to improve the roads in this vicinity reported that a delegation will go before the chairman of the State Road Commission to ascertain just what is contemplated to be done for the roads in the Hampstead vicinity. -- Democratic Advocate, March 11, 1949.
75 years ago: One case was disposed of at Monday morning's session of Frederick court, Judge Worthington presiding. The case, in which Daniel D. Wilson, Woodville, was the plaintiff, ensured from the purchase of a stolen automobile, which belonged to Jacob Friedlander, of North Carolina. The car, which was purchased by Wilson, was stolen by Harvey T. Bowman of Mount Airy last September in Baltimore. Bowman, who has since confessed to stealing a number of machines, admitted the car was stolen from Friedlander. -- Democratic Advocate, March 21, 1924.
100 years ago: Base ball clubs make claims and counterclaims as to the championship of the county. It was proposed by the Westminster Base Ball Club that all the clubs in the county, which have any such pretentions, should form a league and play a series of games with each other, according to a prearranged schedule. -- Democratic Advocate, March 18, 1899.
